What is Gum Disease Treatment?

  • Gum disease treatment involves removing embedded toxins that cause gum disease from below the gum line.
  • If left untreated the bacteria that causes gum disease will eat away at the bone. Bone loss can cause tooth loss.
  • When there is gum disease present, treating it is our number one priority before doing any other work on the teeth. This is because the gums are the foundation of the mouth and we want the foundation to be as healthy as possible before we do restorative work.
  • We can not do a normal cleaning because a normal cleaning is not the kind of cleaning the patient needs at the time. A normal cleaning does not go below the gum line and will not treat the gum disease.
  • Gum disease can be present throughout the mouth or only in select areas.
  • We only work on half the mouth at the same time, because a patient will be numb for the procedure. Also insurance will not cover if all areas are treated on the same day.
  • When only select teeth need to be treated, those are the only teeth that are touched during the appointment, other teeth not being treated will need to wait to be cleaned until the patient’s gum management cleaning appointment.
  • Following treatment for gum disease patients can return to normal activity and we recommend avoiding eating until the numbness has gone away.
  • The patient’s hygienist will call a few days following the procedure to check how they are healing from the treatment. Some discomfort and soreness can occur and we recommend warm salt water rinses to help with this.
  • The hygienist also might recommend the patient to use a prescription strength mouthwash (Peridex) during the healing process. We sell this in the office.
